Many charities know that to end the structural problems affecting the people they serve, they need to be involved in shaping policy, so they’re not still dealing with the same consequences of unfair systems in ten years’ time.
But the political system can be hard to navigate and if you haven’t worked in it yourself, it can be difficult to build an effective strategy that has impact. Understanding what policy-makers need and how they think is crucial to having influence, but it’s not second nature - it comes from experience. Without it, the whole process of advocacy can feel frustrating and futile.
With over a decade of practical experience working in politics, both in government and Parliament, I have worked with many organisations seeking to influence including businesses, charities, investors, campaigners and trade bodies. I’ve seen what makes organisations influential and effective, and I want to share this knowledge with organisations that want to make a positive difference in the world.
Those doing the hard work of social change on the ground are often best placed to understand the issues affecting our communities and identify the right solutions. But their voice is often not heard sufficiently by policy-makers. I help charities and other social purpose organisations leverage their knowledge and expertise to impact public policy and make a lasting difference to the communities they serve.
